BUTTER DEARER
HIGH EXCHANGE AND LOCAL PRICE
A further advance in, the price of butter in the Wellington market was made today. The wholesale price in pats was advanced to' Is 4Jd with an allowance of Jd per lb as discount for payment on due date. This makes the retail price' for standard brands Is 5d per lb. '
The Dairy Board reported that at the close of business in London last Thursday the retail price of New Zealand butter in London was Is Id to Is 2d per lb.
The difference between the price of New Zealand butter in Wellington and New Zealand butter in London is in large part accounted for by the exchange New Zealand on London, but allowance has to be made for the overseas freight and other charges incurred, in placing the New Zealand butter in London.
The London butter market is very firm at 122s per cwt wholesale, and exchange rate provides a substantial premium on the value of produce required for New Zealand consumption.
When the price of New Zealand butter in London was much lower than it is at the moment the price for local consumption was lower accordingly.
