SURF LIFE-SAVING
LYALL BAY CLUB
A RECORD YEAR -
"The season just concluded proved to be an important milestone in the history of the clvb —a season requiring tactful leadership, backed by the steadfast co-operation of every member," says the annual report of the Lyall Bay Surf Life-Saving Club. "The winning of the New Zealand senior life-saving championship, the retaining of both the provincial championships, and all but x>ne of the senior life-saving trophies, is a feat-that any club would be proud to have accomplished. It also proves the efficiency of the club."
The membership of the club now stands at 64, made up of 45 active members, 7 life members, 6 juniors, and 6 associate members. The 30 awards won during the year include 14 bronze medallions of the New Zealand Surf Life-Saving Association.
Another very successful championship meeting was held at New Plymouth. In recent years surf life-saving has increased in popularity, resulting in strong teams participating, and all events were keenly contested. The club entered-two teams in the senior life-saving championship, and to see both teams start in the final is an achievement that will take a lot. of equalling. First and fourth places were secured by club teams in the senior event, and the club also won. the teams' surf race.
The wonderful records in regard to the two provincial championship events were further improved; the beltmen's provincial championship was retained for the sixth successive year with a total of seven wins in eight competitions. In this event the Lyall Bay A team was first with Lyall Bay B an easy second. The Silver Reel championship was retained for the fifth successive year, totalling in" all the eleventh win out of fifteen challenges since the inception of the competition. —
In the water polo competitions, probably the greatest improvement in any section was noted. The A team won the provincial championship, and though they did lose a game, they were on three occasions held to a draw. The B team won the B grade competition, playing 11 games, winning all except one, in which they were held to a drawn game. In all, they, secured 28 goals, and did not have a single goal scored against them—a, remarkable record for a new team.
The jubilee year of the club was celebrated by a very enjoyable function. An evening was held by the combined Maranui and tyall Bay Surf Clubs to do honour to their respective deputy club captains, Mr. E. B. Hughes and Mr. S. O. Muller. Oh that occasion New Zealand Surf Association blazers were presented to the captains from the officers and members of their respective clubs, in .appreciation of the great work they had done for their clubs over a number of years.
The annual meeting .of the club is to be held tomorrow night.
