GIRLS' COLLEGE
REMODELLING DESIRED
A request that the Wellington Girls' College, Thorndon, should be remodellled was made by a deputation representative of the Board of Governors and the Parents' Association, which waited on the Minister of Education (the Hon. S. G. Smith) today
The chairman of the board (Colonel G. Mitchell) said-that the college was probably one of the oldest buildings in Wellington, and had been added to by a brick building. The board was anxious to see a temporary iron structure done" away with. The entire building was inconvenient in many respects, and was such that the full activities of the school could not be carried out. The suggestion had been made that the school should be rebuilt ori another site, but the board had come to the conclusion that no other site was obtainable.
The request was supported by Mrs. Knox Gilmer, who said she attended the deputation first as an old girl of the' college,, and second as the Government nominee on the board. The present accommodation was such that teaching of modern subjects could not be carried out. The "tin shed" accommodated 175 pupils, and contained five classrooms*
Replying, the Minister expressed his sympathy with thfe request of the deputation, and said that he would inspect the school next week. He stated, however,-that it was not possible to provide-for expenditure this year.
