MR. APPLETON AT SILVERSTREAM
I There, was an. attendance o£ about [sixty pedple to hear Mr. Will Appleton* the Independent candidate for Otaki, deliver an address in the Social Hall, SHverstrearh, last evening. Mr. iT. M. Milligan presided.
The candidate expressed the opinion that at'this election, perhaps more than on any previous occasion, electors would decide the issue on non-party lines. The people were far from satisfled with the existing state of affairs, and while they did not desire a Socialistic regime they did, rightly demand the accesson of new blood. There was a definite call for pregressive men witn independent views who were not prepared to blindly jump to the crack of the party whip. Mr. Appleton mentioned that •at least 29 Independents would be standing in various parts of New .Zealand, and when the names were announced the: public would be surprised at the calibre of the men who were offering their services. He ventured the opinion that so many woulrt be returned that they would form ah effective force in the new House. Generally speaking they had one common aim, and that was to strengthen the I Government of the country, and to bring into force-measures which would really, rehabilitate the economic life of the Dominion.
On the motion of Mr. W. Perry, seconded by Mr. B. B. Eckersley, the candidate, was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence. ■
Mr. Appleton wili address meetings of electors at the Public Hall, Stokes Valley, on ■ Saturday evening, and at [Makara Hall, Makara, on Monday evening. ■':"'•.■
