A RECEPTION

MISSIONARY AUXILIARY

A reception was given recently at the Wesley Hall by the Methodist Women's Missionary Auxiliary to Sister Lina Jones, who is in charge of the educational work among the girls at Roviana, Western Solomons. The hall was gay with Iceland poppies and marigolds. ' Mrs. Pacey (president) was in the chair and she gave the visitor -a most cordial welcome.

Sister Lina spoke in a delightful way | of her work. Several of her charges', had been in the home since their birth, their mothers having died, and who, according to previous custom, would have been buried with them. They were educated and guided even to the wedding day. These girls set the standard to those in the villages. They learned to keep house, to make mats, and attend to the gardens, besides atpending school. Specimens of their needlework were shown.

A letter was read from the Rev. A. H. Scriven, who is visiting the Solomon Islands, giving a most favourable report of what is being done for the people. Mrs. L. J. Clark told'of the packing of the gift boxes, two being sent to each missionary and sister, while 18 sacks have gone to the Maoris, and £11 in cash to the Rev. J. F. Goldie. Mrs. Gardiner sang a solo, with Mrs. Nicolson as accompanist.

The Vicar of Pinhoe. Exeter, still receives a pension of one mark "because his predecessor, in the year 1001, rode into the city to get a fresh supply of arrows when the Saxon ammunition was running low against the onslaught of the Danes."
