ESPERANTO CLUB
The. weekly meeting: of-the Wellington Esperanto Club-was held last night] in the hall of -the .Tararua Tramping! Club, Nathan's Building, Grey Street Mr. Vernon J. Leek presiding. Cor-1 respoijdence was- received from -Esperanto clubs andundiyidual Esperaritists, from Sweden,. ."Czechoslovakia, Canada, Hungary,:, Palestine,. Russia, and .Chile. -Mr;W. "L. Edmanson, F.8.E.A., examiner for New Zealand on. behalf of .the .British Esperanto Associatibn,! stated';that in view -'of- the1 great. lieed undef V;modern .conditions' for a &imple>yet: adequate International auxiliary;: Janguage,; which could be learned in all civilised lands, and freely employed in ,'SReech'i'aiid Writing. ia- alt walks of life,' hfei'desired to call atterition. to; the.'-, merits■ ■: of.; Esperanto ' and its place ■ia education." He ; referred to the widespread- and fluent iise of the language for v travel, cultural intercourse, arid personal friendship, but its achievements for technical and professional purposes were already considerable. Esperanto lectureships had been established at the universities of Liverpool, Geneva, and Cracow.. Scientific and medical bodies made extensive use of Esperanto.: The international society of Esperantist teachers had oh its files the names of 7000 teachers (in sixty countries), who knew Esperanto, and over 1000 schools (in thirty-two countries) where Esperanto classes had been set up, including elementary and secondary schools in Great Britain. A working knowledge of Esperanto could be obtained in a remarkably short time compared with that required for national languages.
Classes were organised under the direction of experienced teachers, followed by an evening of dancing. In the course of the proceedings guitar items , were ' presented by Messrs. Joseph Thomas and Nelson Hill. Dance music was supplied by Mr. Fred Dahl and Mr, Hill.~ Mr. Bertram Potts was M.C.
