MARATHON EVENT
LONG-DISTANCE RUNNING
It was decided by the Wellington harrier sub-committee last night to apply to the Wellington' Amateur Athletic Centre for permission to hold a marathon on the day of the provincial championship meeting, the race to be under the jurisdiction of the sub-com-mittee.
The question was raised by Mr. D. Pedersen (BrooJflyn), oi whether it would be wise to extend the harrier programme into the summer season. He expressed the view that the season was quite long enough without doing that.
Other delegates questioned whether competitors, could be expected to remain in training for a long; period for only one racei and' the suggestion'was made that a ten miles race be held prior to the marathon. -Accordingly, it was decided, Mr. Pedersen dissenting, to recommend,'to the Wellington Centre that it-conduct a-ten miles road race on a .suitable date before the marathon is held. '
The secretary '(Mr. L. F. Dawkins) suggested that the. Bennett Memorial road race be-put forward to about the second week-in-September, and the season-then-officially-closed... ' It wasl decided- that the matter be a subject for discussion at the annual meeting of the subcommittee in March next. . ..■•...-.- ~.; . -...-. ... . ~
