HIDES FOR ITALY.
Weddel and Co., London, August 29, write:—We have not heard of very much taking place in New Zealand hides, although freezer cows, 30/501b, are reported, to have been sold at 4£d; abattoirs at 4d. Quite a fair number of countries have been sold at 3jd. Shippers today have increased their prices by id on these figures, but so far no business has been reported at these levels. There is nothing of special interest to report on Capes. There are small supplies avajlable, and those that are available are finding their way to Italy, where very high (prices have been paid. This business is being done on a compensation basis. Leather continues steady with a firm i tendency, and there is a fairly optimistic tone about; in fact one leather trade paper mentions that prospects at the present time are distinctly more promising this period than they have been for years past. This should be a good omen for the future hide position.
