GALE IN VICTORIA
EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE
HEAVY SNOWFALL INLAND
MELBOURNE, July 19. The whole of the southern portion of the State of Victoria is being swept by a 45-mile-an-hour gale, which is considerably hampering shipping and doing extensive damage to property and to electric light and telegraph lines.
Attempts to berth the liner Monterey today proved futile, and the vessel was finaly compelled to anchor oil Port Melbourne. Smaller ships were unable to enter the Yarra River.
The inter-State liner Westralia, i rom Perth, was forced to anchor in the bay and send her passengers ashore in tugs. Damage was done on the foreshore. Piers were damaged and small craft blown ashore.
Reports from the country slate thai, there have been heavy falls of snow. A regular blizzard is raging in the Southern Australian Alps.
