OPIUM CHARGES

HAINING STREET RAID

Steel-lined-- doors and heavily-tim-bered barricades made difficult the task of seven' detectives who raided premises in Haining Street at 1.15 this morning, but their, efforts, brought two Chinese-before the Magistrate's Court today on charges connected with opium. ■ A large, quantity of smoking material was seized.

"Ah Hong; a fruiterer, aged 58, and Chan Kong, a fruiterer, aged 34, both of 1 Haining Street, were charged with being in possession of prepared opium, and being without lawful excuse on premises used for the purpose of opium smoking.

Detective-Sergeant L. B. Revell said that the accused had asked for the services of an interpreter, but he had not arrived at the court In the interests of the charged men the case should be stood downVintil Monday. ' The Magistrate (Mr. J. H. Luxford.
