HUTT NOT DISGRACED

Taking matters fairly easily, Hospital had little trouble in disposing of the visiting Lower Hutt team last week. Yet, in scoring twice, Hutt demonstrated that the Hospital defence is not impregnable if forwards keep the ball moving. To. put ori frills, in front of Miles, Thompson and .Co: is fatal to success. . ";;: In W. Woods, Hospital: possess a winger who is playing well above his last season's form. This player also knows the direct way to goal, and is frequently successful, like Kay of Auckland, in cutting in to meet a ball from the right. In this match he scored twice in this fashion, and his first-minute run and score was a spectacular opening. With Caisley as his partner and Simon at his back, he is particularly well served with the ball. ■ McGrary is another player who is showing consistently good form. Shooting has been the weak spot .of his game, but .this has improved . out of sight in the last two matches. A strong point of his play is the manner in which he draws his man before parting to Gibb, thus giving the latter plenty of time for that powerful right drive or accurate centre. In the centre-half position, Jefl'ery as usual did the work of two men. For the losers, Mewtoun saved well on occasions, but had little Miop'e of stopping any of the close-in efforts. Though in an unaccustomed position, Cross showed his class by his gallant defence in the left-back berth. Stobbs was another who stuck to his guns despite the heavy task of ..countering the almost continuous movements of the opposing forwards. In front, Costley secured both his side's goals, and was easily the most dangerous of the five. R. McLellanput in several good runs, while Body's quick dash near the end1 might, have secured another goal had he taken the ball just a little bit further in. As a rule, however, he was given the ball when awkwardly placed, and seldom in front of him. As there are no first-aid attendants on duty1 at Te Aro Park, the caretaker has offered facilities t6 injured players at his house.

Old- Boys (second fifteen) packed a neat and workmanlike scrum, and were in possession almost continually, but their forwards were generally inferior outside the scrum. The Berhampore pack played with any amount of dash, but their scrum work left much to be desired. Bognuda, Powell, and Hickling were •veryeffective on the line-out,- and the two last-named worked hard , otherwise. Bognuda, well on in the veteran stage, was much cleverer than most of his team-mates, though by no means' so hard-working. A couple of promoted fourth grade boys in Brycc and Eagle held their own well. Wailc, N. Dellabarca and : Griffiths were good toilers in Eastbourne's pack. A. Kenny played an outstanding.game for Johnspnville, and was''-ably, supported by Round, Bowler, and Treiv. chard.
