THEFTS OF FARM GOODS

FARMERS CONCERNED

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, June 7.

Concern at the prevalence of thefts of wool and other articles in country districts was expressed today at the annual conference of the North Canterbury Farmers' Union. The following remit was before the conference:— "That in view of the prevalence of wool-stealing the Government be urged to amend the Stock Act to provide that all dealers in wool should be registered and sales recorded in the same manner as dealers in skins and hides, and that the co-operation of the police be asked for in the detection of offenders."

It was stated that a good deal of wool was stolen from sheds. This was very easy for a man with i. motortruck. One delegate said that 17 bales had been stolen within a 10-mile radius of his home within the last eighteen months. Another said he thought something should be done about motorlorries abroad at night. He suggested that some checking of such lorries to discover whether they were on legitimate business was necessary. Another farmer said that he had lost a dray and a set of harness.

The remit will be redrafted and referred to. the Dominion conference.
