OBITUARY
MR. ALEXANDER CABLE The death occurred in Port Chalmers on Wednesday, at the age of 74 years, of Mr. Alexander Cable. Born at Leslie, in Fifeshire, Scotland, Mr. Cable came to New Zealand when five years of age. He was educated at Milton Hall School, Dunedin, and other schools, and learned, pattern-making at the Otago Foundry. Later he was engaged by the firm of Morgan and Cable, at Port Chalmers, as draughtsman and pattern maker, and later when the firm was changed to the Maori Ironworks he was appointed manager. Mr, Cable, who was a. Justice of the Peace, took an active interest in the affairs of Port Chalmers, and was a member of the ■ Borough Council for a lengthy period, as well as being the representative of the borough on the Otkgo .Harbour Board for a number of years. He was also a prominent member of the Manchester Unity Lodge, jo.ining the Loyal Prince of Wales Lodge at Port Chalmers. He i attended his first district meeting in 1898, and within two years he was appointed to a district office, and from 1901 to 1902 he was Provincial Grand Master of the district. Of outstanding honour and integrity, Mr. Cable was enthusiastic and energetic in whatever he took up, and did a great deal of valuable social work. He was an accomplished and witty speaker, and delivered his addresses at a remarkable speed. He was also an active member of the Masonic Order. For a number of years he was a director of the Dunedin Starr-Bowkett Building Society. Mr. Cable was a brother of the late Mr. William Cable, of Wellington, and an uncle of Mr. Matthew Cable, of the 'Wellington CorDoration tramways. '
