THE CITY COUNCIL

MR. FORSYTH LOSES SEAT

LABOUR RETAINS POSITION

Non-party and Labour representation upon the City Council remains as it was before the election, that is, there are nine Citizens' councillors and six Labour councillors, though the personnel is changed. Mr. T. Forsyth, who was one of the senior councillors and for some years has been chairman of the Works Committee, has been unseated, and the place on his side of the table has been taken by Mr. & A.

Wright. Mr. Semple did not stand for the council, and the sixth Labour seat is filled by Mr. A. Black.

Mr. P. Fraser topped the poll with the astonishing vote of 28,215, and is followed by two other Labour councillors, Messrs. Chapman and McKeen, both with over 25,000 votes, and then Mr. Wright with over 22,000. i In the 1933 City Council election the highest vote was 13,821 (Mr. Chapman), but this year that vote would have placed a candidate nowhere, for the lowest successful vote (Mr. W. Duncan) was over 18,000.

Already rumours are flying round the city that the positions of Messrs. Duncan and A. Parlane have been reversed on the recounts; that is not so, for the recount has not been made. In the 1933 recount this did happen, Mr. P. M. Butler replacing Mr. R. L. Macalister as the fifteenth on the list, but in that case there was a difference of only 24 votes, whereas Mr. Duncan holds a lead of 95 votes over Mr. Parlane, a margin which will be not easily made up.

The five Communist candidates were placed definitely at the bottom of the list, but no candidate loses his deposit.
