PRAISE FOR SEAMAN
RESCUE EFFORT IN VAIN
A' finding that death was due to accidental drowning was returned by the Coroner (Mr. E. Gilbertson, JJ>.) at the inquest today upon Patrick Morriss, aged 63, a waterside worker, who fell into the harbour," from the wharves on the afternoon' of April 26. In giving his verdict the Coroner praised the action of Alexander Marshall, a seaman, who jumped into the water and rescued the drowning man. Morriss was seen oh the wharf at about 3. pjn^ on April 26, and a little later he was noticed in the water having apparently fallen, in, opposite No. 9 shed. Marshall took off his coat and dived in after him. Artificial respiration was tried, but Morriss died1 on the way to hospital.
