RESTORATION OF "CUTS"

THE POSITION EXPLAINED *

It has been stated by Labour speakers during the present municipal election campaign that had it not been for the Labour membere of the Wellington Harbour Board members of the board's staff, would not have received the restoration of half of the 10 per cent, cut imposed in salaries! .and wages. In response to the request of a num-, ber of correspondents, "The Post" to-1 day ascertained the actual position. Itl was made clear that the motion pro-1 viding for the restoration»was moved! by the chairman (Mr. T. R. .Barter)'! and adopted by the board unanimously. In June, 1934, the staff petitioned the board for the restoration of' the cuts, and the petition was referred I V5 c£ ial commlttee, which recommended that there should be no restoration at that juncture, but that the board should prosecute capital works in order to provide employment for a number of men wiio were out of work As a result 100 additional men were placed on maintenance and construction works at standard rates-of pay The question of the restoration of the cuts was held over until the results of the financial year ending September, 1934, were known. In October, 1934, the chairman of the board, after placing the results of the year before members, moved that half of the 10 per cent. cut.should be restored at a cost of £7800. The motion was unanimously carried by the board.
