Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, the sitting Mayor, and the JCitizens' candidate for the Mayoralty, is ; a son of the late Hon. • T. W; Hislpp, a former Mayor of Wellington, and a grandson of the late John Hislop, LL.D.; F.R.S., whose out-standing-work in' New Zealand may be saiditb have laid .the foundations of our educational system; he , was in large measure responsible for the Education Act of 1875, which remained practically unaltered "until 1914. Mr. T. C. A. In 1927 he was again elected to the City" Council.-. In 1931, he was elected Mayor, to which office ,he v was returned unopposed in 1933. Mr. R..Sempie,MJ>.,, Labour ■candidate, is. one "of-the. founders, and a ■ former president of the Labour' movement of ;New Zealand. ; He first took | an active part : m; toe'movement; in' . Newcastle,' New South "Wales.t where 'h^fworked'asi a iniher,'.following that occupation also in Gippsland and West Australia.' * He came to New Zealand in_ 1903, t ' working ;in the .State; Coal ( 'niines v at..Grreymouth,.,where -he'formed1-. 'the; StateV Mfiieara'' Union; arid was ;its president.- ,;He-assisted vi forming tiie Mines'- Federation; and: was '.its first. president. When it 'merged into the New Zealand' Federation of Labour,' he .was elected tte^'first president of .the new body;; and later its organiser. For five years 'he: wis. Mines Inspector for 'New Zealand." Mr. Semple represented 'Wellington South during 1918-1919, and Wellington^ East for the last seven years. He has been a member 'of the I Wellington-City Council foi the last ten years, a member of, the Harbour '.Board since the last election, and was a.member of the Fire Board from 'which he resigned. He has b"een associated wjth other public bodies, with school'committee work on^the West and with k many social and humanitarian organisations. For a number -tit years he was .organiser for the industrial organisations of New Zealand. As the leader of the co-' 'operative company which put through -the Orongorongo tunnel in record time, 'Mr/Semple proved his organising abii"ity r in the case of major works. *'
