THE NEW SEASON
KRUSKAMP STARTS WELL
"Hardy" Kruskamp needed only a few minutes in the ring at the Town Hall on Wednesday night to show the public that his claims to being an entertaining wrestler with a flair for fast, open work were by no .means illfounded. He set out from the start
to keep the more weighty Pereira moving briskly and once he had the Portuguese, co-operating with him in making the 'proceedings open, he had the dattle half won. So far as could be gathered from appearances, it was a near thing at the finish, as repeated collisions with Pereira's great bulk seemed to have taken practically all the fight out of Kruskamp.
The match w,as remarkable for the manner in which one man's example would, be followed by the other. If one tried a hammer lock, he would soon be resisting that grip; if Pereira threw Kruskamp out of the ring, very shortly afterwards Pereira would be outside, and so on. At one stags Pereira swung Kruskamp round and round in an arm stretch until, Triti bewildering suddenness Kruskamp turned the tables and was master of the situation by means of the same hold. • , ,
. Altogether the bout can be.considered to have given the season a: successful send-off. There was showmanship, and plenty of it, but it was mixed with sufficient 'straight wrestling and carried out with such apparent sincerity that it added to, rather than detracted from the crowd's interest in the proceedings. - :
'The incident which occurred in the second round, when Kruskamp had'a fall awarded against him, was somewhat unfortunate, and Kruskamp's discomfiture appeared to have considerable justification. Still, the referee wos at liberty to step in if he thought there was clanger of an arm being broken, ft was a pity that he made up his mind just as KrusKamp had induced Pereirja to let go by giving him three pals on the back.
