OFF TO AUSTRALIA

VALUABLE LIMOND COLT

After spending a little over three months at the Westmere Stud., the" high-priced Limond—Veil colt, purchased at the Trentham sales in January, will be shipped to Australia next week. With him will go the Captain Bunshy—Chelae colt and the Captain Bunsby—Rapide ' colt, each of whom found an Australian purchaser last January.

Seen at Westmere this week, the Limond colt impresses as being a solid youngster with a courageous head likely to be seen in the forefront of many a stirring struggle at Randwick or Flemington if he fulfils the promise of his younger days, says the Wanganui writer "Kestrel." It should be noted in passing that this colt, bred by Mr. G. M. Currie at Koatanui, not only topped the list at the national sale of yearlings at Trentham, but also held the record of reaching tho highest price of the year in New Zealand and Australia. Ihe youngster was knocked down to Mr. •T. 1. Jamieson's bid .after spirited competition by Australians present or represented by their commissioners, at 2100 guineas, or within 300 guineas of the record price paid for Zetes some years ago. It is not surprising that this yearling attracted the fancy of the visitors from across the Tasman Sea, as it is in their country that his relations have become best known. Jamieson is to train the colt. He is a full-brother to Veilmond (a good horse, now retired to the stud, and who raced profitably for Mr. E. Moss, of Sydney, from G. Price's stable), the filly Visage (winner of the A.J.C. Gimcrack Stakes), and half-brother to Prince Pombal (son of PombaJ, and a good winner), and a two-year-old called Saecula (son of the new imported sire Posterity), who scored in Sydney in the late summer.

Under the circumstances the Limond— Veil youngster was expected to realise a long price. He is a youthful thoroughbred above the ordinary in conformation, size, and appearance. He is by a sire who

has of late years become famous in Australia as the progenitor of New Zealand-, bred youngsters, viz.: Limond (imp., by Desmond, son of St. Simon) -from Veil, by Absurd (imp.) from Cowl, by King Rufus (imp.) from Our Lady, by Simmer from Lady Agnes, by Nickersgat (noted Australian sire of speed) from Peradventure (imp. and good taproot mare). His grandam, Cowl, produced a long line of descendants for Mr. G. M. Currie, including Farce (filly), Rational (colt), ' Veil (filly), The Monk (colt), Mask (colt), Curtain (filly), Habit (filly), Monastic (colt). The Masquerader (colt), and Lattice (filjy). The successes attributed to ('owl encourage the belief that her daughter Veil is also going to. breed on in like degree, and these justify the substantial price given for the brother to Veilmond and half-brother to Saecula, by Posterity, by Son-in-Law. It will be interesting to follow the fortunes of the Limond colt when he sports silk next season. 'A striking appearance is that of the Captain Bunsby—Chelae colt, who is a golden chestnut with a white blaze down his .face and three ". white" socks, while the silver mane and. tail are likely to be prominent features of some of the rich two-year-old races on the other side of the Tasman. Chelae, dam of this colt, is a sister to Herowinkie, the dam of the champion Hall Mark, winner of upwards of £25,000 in stakes in Australia. r"& t.nea^' wel.]:PVoP°rtipned • colt, is the Half-brother, by Captain Bunsby, to Speed and Diatomous, out of the Polygnotus mare Kspide. He and Speed are the only colts out ol Rapide, and as Speed lias won over twenty, races this relative must be accounted a promising purchase at the 230 guineas paid for him last January. For the Chelae colt 250 guineas «vas bid. • The three colts are a credit to their breeding and their appearance does justice to the care bestowed on them by the stud groom at Westmere, Mr. M. Grogan who will, no doubt, view their departure next week with mixed feelings of pleasure and relief.
