ANTI-GAS DEFENCE

REHEARSAL IN BRITAIN

RED CROSS AND RAIDS

(Received April 10, 2 p.m.)

LONDON, April 9. The British Red Cross Society staged a demonstration of anti-gas defence and first-aid in chemical warfare at Chislehurst where maroons sounded the alarm and thick clouds of smoke engulfed the hillsides near the famous caves, to which Red Cross nurses equipped with anti-gas clothing and the latest gas masks took on stretchers "cases" of gas poisoning, realistically enacted' by local people. Meanwhile the caves, which are naturally bombproof, were transformed into gas-proof shelters by an air lock, preventing the entrance of gas, when an inner door was opened to admit "victims. It is announced that 100,000 voluntary aid and Red Cross workers throughout Britain had been taught to render similar assistance and prevent a panic of civilians in the event of a rear raid.
