TOBACCO PRICES

SUPPORT FROM GROCERS

Pointing out that it had supported the Tobacconists' Association in its endeavour to get a. reasonable profit on tobacco and cigarettes, the Wellington Grocers' Industrial Union of Employers staled in its annual report presented to members last night: "The fixation of price was of supreme importance to the tobacconists to prevent many of them losing their business. Owing to tobacco being a side-line, -we may not have benefited financially to the'same extent as tobacconists, but the fixation of price has removed all friction from the trade and the scheme runs like a well-oiled machine. Fixation has also eliminated the customer who persistently maintained that it was possible to buy certain lines at a price below cost."
