Admiral Patey, who entered the Navy in 1872, served as midshipman in the Shah in the engagement between that ship and the Peruvian turret ship Huascar arid afterwards in the Zulu War in 1879. He was commander of H.M.S. Barfleur in. the Mediterranean during the Cretan insurrection.: After other commands, mainly in' the Mediterranean, he ' was appointed.
