300 ACRES OF CRASS SWEPT (By Telegraph—l'ress Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 4. On a sheep run own eel by Mr. J. T. Denton on the Plains five miles northwest of' Southbrldge, 31 " miles from Christchurch, fire today swept '300 acres of dry grass and threatened, to spread over neighbouring properties and an acre of pine plantation on the Oakleigh Estate. A large-arm of fire-fighters, with the aid of fire:breaks:.and careful .back firing, eventually controlled': and extinguished the. fire. Mr. Denton had been anxious about fire risk and his staffs had, been burning off with narrow fire breaks. The outbreak began when the fire leapt across the break into the dry pasture and quickly spread over a half-mile front.
