CHESS
CHAMPIONSHIP CONGRESS
SPECIAL PRIZE-WINNERS
Two special prizes were offered iv connection" with the tourney that was held iv Christchurch, during; the Christmas holidays to decide the chess championship of A rew Zealand. • A-' brilliancy .prize of £1 la was donated by Mr. L; J. Mitchell (president of the Canterbury Chess Club) and a "best ..recovery" priise of a like amount was offered ..by Air. 0. C. Pleasants, of Matiere, who is a North Island vice-president of tlie New Zealand Chess Association. There were unfortunately no entries for the latter prize, which can therefore be applied in another way at the next meeting of the association: The games entered for the' bril-" liancy prize were referred, tinder mottoes, to Mr. H. L. Andersen, Canterbury's leading expert, who defeated some of the Dominion's champions at the first Wanganui Congress when he. was Qnly 16 years of age. He awarded''the prize to the game, which bore the motto "an expensive pawn," remarldng .that in his opinion it was oil a higher plane than the other competing games!' : This means that the winner is Mr. F: K. Kelling,: who was one of the representatives of the Wellington Working Men's Club and.Literary institute. He has now won this distinction four times, and has also annexed the best recovery: prize on four occasions. No doubt his love of end-games, 'of whjch he has, made a close study for some years past, has helped him to win so many of these special'prizes. It is curious that his four brilliancy, prizes have been won at; tenryear intervals, as follows:—1905, at Oamafu, against D. Fbrsyth (Otago Chess Club) • 1915, at Christchurch, against G. F. Dodds (Nelson Chess Club); 1925, at Nelson, against E. A..Hicks (Wellington Chess Club); 1935, at Christchurch, against. L. J., Darwin (Canterbury Chess Club)., Messrs. Forsyth and Hicks have "crossed, the Great Divide." Ten years ago Kellinsc ■:,was jocularly asked by a friend," "What are you going to do about it,in 1935"? He smilingly replied thai be would be very, hicky if the year 1935 still found him on the active list.-. It haE been drily suggested-that as his latest opponent, Mr. Danvin, is a lecturer in mathematics, he will not regret losing to Kelling.in the second round on December 27 as he thereby extended the "arithmetical progression" (1905, ; 1915, 1925, 1935)! The news of Mr.. Andersen's award has spread quickly; and Mr. Kelling has already received many- congratulations, including one from Mr.lo. Balk, the patron of the Otago Chess Club, and one sent from Christchurch by Mr. Hans Kennedy (president of the New Zealand Chess Association). : ~ : , ' : BRJLLiANCY PRIZES. : From a perusal-of' old files it would appear that the first brilliancy prize at New Zealnnd's Chess Congresses - was that donated .40 years ago by Mr. E.
