AUSTRALIAN WINE

SMALL AMERICAN MARKET

1-ederal Ministers and officers of the Commerce and Customs Departments are disappointed at the poor results so far obtained in the effort to create a market for Australian wines in the United States. When the United States abandoned Prohibition and subsequently agreed to make available to Australia a temporarily unrestricted market for wine, it was hoped that an important export trade would be developed, and the preliminary exports in the early months of last year indicated that this .hope would be realised. Since the middle of last year, exports to the United btates have dwindled to a negligible total and at present the market is alm6st valueless. -%,.

The situation is attributed officially to the keen competition from large quantities of immature second-rate wines from turope. These undersell Australian wines Statistics show that during April and May the quantity of Australian wine shipped to the United States was 47 971 gallons, its value being £13,757. For the five months from July to the end of November the- exports amounted to only 30,454 gallons, the value falling to £0923
