CROQUET
WELLINGTON TOURNEY
The Wellington Croquet Association's fifteenth annual tournament opened at Lower.. Hutt' this morning in perfect weather. A large number of competitors and supporters was present at Eiddiford Park where the tournament was officially opened by Mi\J. W. Andrews, Mayor of Lower Hutt.
Mrs. W. S. . Austin, president of the Wellington Croquet Association, Welcomed 'all-, competitors' and expressed the hope that tbey would spend an enjoyable time both in play and in social intercourse. She extended the thanks of the association to the croquet players at Lower Hutt and Petone for the excellent lawns placed at the disposal of the association, and to Mr. E. Hutt, Director of Reserves at Lower Hult, and his staff, for the effort they had made to keep the lawns in perfect condition. Thanks were also extended to the president and committee of the Lower Hutt Plu'nket Society who1 placed their rooms at. the disposal of the association. Sirs. Austin auaounced that the entries to date numbered 282, added to which would be the post entries. Players -were competing from Wanganui, Westport, Hawera, Palmerston North, and Featherston.' In calling on Mr. Andrcwa to open £he tournament, Mrs. Austin thanked him and Mrs. Andrews, rlso Mr. and Mrs. J. Mitchell, fortheir presence,and interest in the sport. Mr. Andrews thanked Mrs. Austin on behalf of the Borough Council staff for her appreciation of their work. He congratulated the association on the number of _entries and the widespread area from which the players were drawn. He expressed the hope that a very enjoyable time would be spent by all. ; •
The following is a list of referees and umpires appointed for the tournament:— Acting official referee, Mrs. Mouat; rsferdes, Mesdames Gardner, Booeock, Bock, Walker, Savage, Kelly, Fairley, Brice, MnKenzie, Saunders, Austin, and Gilbert; umpires, Mesdames Winchcorabe. Salder, Swiney, Leadbeatter, King, Ramsay, Frost, and Miss H. McKenzie. ,
Sirs.' K. Boocoek is the manager of the tournament. Play is taking place at Wwmarie, Woburn, Central, and iVgaroma, comprising eleven lawns in all.
E. Johnston and Co., auctioneers, will sell household furnishings in their basement mart, No. S Willcston Street, at 1.30 p.m. tomorrow, ,
