DEWAR SHIELD

CYCLINa CHAMPIONS

A SUCCESSFUL MEETING

A successful sports meeting, comprising team events lot the Dewar Shield, cycling championships, and handicap races, was held at the Petone Recreation Ground in the presence of a large number o£ spectators on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were good, but all events were got off under a burling sun and' the ground was on the hard side for running and jumping. >• College Old Boys secured moat pointß for the Dewar Shield, with Wellington next, but the points lead is small enough to make the next shield meeting'interesting. ;In the shield competition teams for the field events consisted of two men, and m the hurdle events of one man. : The standard set throughout was good, several finishes being most spectacular. Ihe javelin throw (a team event) was won by the harrow margin of one inch, and only a tlra separated the first and second in the 1000-metre cycle championship. The mile (two 220 yds, 440 yds, and 880 yds) relay race proved to be a thrilling contest, the Kiwi team beating -Scottish by inches only. The cycling events created great interest, the spectators becoming wildly enthusiastic over the finish of the 10-mile championship, which was fought out by the placed men, and was won by T. Roe from O. Disley by about three-yards. There was a good muster of athletes for the parade for the Kitto Shield, which was won by the Wellington Club with a very fine performance. 1 After the. grand-parade, and while the clubs were grouped before the stand, Mr. Walter,Nash, M.P., welcomed the competitors and referred briefly to the value oE athletic training. .„ . ' .• Mr. A. C. Kirto, president of the Wellington Centre, also welcomed the competitors. The large number of events was got off very expeditio'usly by an energetic committee, Mr.. T. W. ("Dome") Leslie being the starter. Results were as.follows:— SITTO SHIELD. _ , . , . Points. Wellington Club 93 1 Kiwi Club. ....< 8S Old Boys'.
