WELLINGTON AT TOP OF LADDER
THREE OUTRIGHT WINS: KILBIRNIE DEFEATED
With only one more series of matches to be played in the first round, local senior teams bid keenly for the maximum points on Saturday, when the sixth series was concluded. Three teams managed to gain their objective, but in one instance it was a case of the biters being bitten. Kilbirnie had a lead of nearly 100 runs on the first innings over University, and after the score had reached 54 for three wickets their second innings was declared closed. University had a little over an hour in which to be put out or score 151 runs, and enterprising batting enabled them to score victory in the last over. Blandford scored a fine double with the bat for University. At the Basin Reserve Hutt were given an even more favourable chance of turning the tables. Against the Wellington attack (weakened by the absence of Blundell) they had the opportunity to score 236 runs in over two and a half hours, but, with the exception of one partnership, the batsmen again failed badly. Symes bowled in match-winning style tor Wellington, and Rotherham batted exceptionally well for Hutt, The other 8-pointer was scored at Petone, where the local batsmen were unable to cope with the Midland bowling in ; their second innings. In the other match at the Basin Reserve Wellington College Old Boys, for whom Burnette scored a solid century, managed to pass Institute's score without much difficulty.. Saturday's results give Wellington the lead in the championship by three points from Kilbirnie, with University and Midland next.
