OLD BOYS AND HUTT

Showing excellent judgment jji the time of making their declaration, and playing keen cricket every minute of the match, Ilutt made a valiant bid for an outfight win against Old Boys on the Hutt Recreation Ground, only to be defeated in their purpose by a few minutes. Accordingly, they had to be content with a five-point, first innings win.. When play began on Saturday Old Boys had -to thcir-credit a first innings bcorc of 95, and Hutt were at the wickets with three men gone and 177 runs on the board. They continued to 232 for lour wickets, at which stage they declared, a decision that subsequently proved to be a shrewd one Old Boys took tjieir second strike, and with a well-made' 198 left Ilutt to make 62 rune in twenty-five minutes for an eight-point win. . This twenty-nve minutes included ten minutes extra claimed by and given to. Hutt, but it was not quite'long enough, and Hutt tailed by 19 runs. The unluckiest man in the match was Hamilton. He had 9S to his credit when stumps were drawn on the first day, and with Aim (11) as.a partner it was hoped that he would considerably exceed the century on Saturday. As luck would have it, however, he got very little oi the bowling, and after ton minutes of play, during which he failed to increase hw score, he played one of Lamaeon s deliveries into the hands of Burnette. Jhe total was then 188. Aim continued with McLeod, the former cautiously and the latter more enterprisingly, until at 3 p.m. they had reached 232, at which stage the innings was declared closed. Lamason did most of Old Boys' bowling, and was the most successful, taking two wickete for 47. . n Old Boys were at the wickets for 160 minutes, in making their 198, which included more than one bright effort. Burnette, one of the opening batsmen, led the 'way with a total* of 26, after giving two chances, which were missed by Fowlev and " 'Aim ' respectively. Meanwhile dv Chateau and McGuirc had both ■ gone very cheaply. Wareham and Lamason were.then joined in a fourth-wicket partnership that boosted the total from 36 to ]40. Wareham was inclined to bat canuily, but Lamason lashed out at almost any thing that 100 Wed promising, and lie was chiefly responsible for sending the score upwards 60 rapidly. The pair made 50 in thirty-two minutes and 100 in sixtythree minutes, during which time Lamason especially distinguished himself by lifting one of Judd's deliveries on to the lofty-roof of the new grandstand. His hectic innings included two chances which the Hutf men loat, but the third one he gave was safely held by Champness and terminated his batting career for 62. Wareham was dismissed a little later for a more quietly-compiled 46. The rest oh the tail wagged very feebly, and Hutt might have had an easy outiight win but far the great s>tand made by Barclay, the eighth man in. who carried his bat tor a much-needed 41, "made in Hhirty-four minute*. Strangely enough, Jiulil,. who recorded such extraordinarily good bowling figures against Old Boya in their lirst innings, was Tight out of ' the running in the second, taking only one wicket for 6S, although he- had the lion's share of the bowling. Ross was the hero, with six wickets for 41 runs; Hutt began their, second innings at G.lo p m. and were allowed until G. 40 p.m. because of a late start. To get 62 in 2o 'minutes seemed a liopelef/s task, but the Hutt batsmen^et about it with a will, taking every sort of risk in their endeavour to make the Tim's. Fowler and Cliampucss fell easy victims .to the necessity to hit everything' and take the consequences, but Hamilton, Hughes, and Ros* Ipllowcd the same course with no small measure of success. The time was too brief, however and they failed to gain the outright win by 19 runs. A couple more overs might have, given the extra three point?. It was an exciting end to- ■a ■ splendid match. . • r.i t> Duncan was the fortunate Old Uoys bowler,, taking . three wickets for 13 runs. ■ ~ '".'"■r ■■■
