UNIVERSITY DEFEATED

Faced with. Petone's first ihnings ■ total of 223, University (one wicket down for 11 runs on the first day's play) failed miserably 'when play was resumed, the whole side being dismissed for 91 runs. Riddolls early had the University batsmen in difficulties, and Smith also was effective, both these bowlers coming out with excellent figures. The top scorer for University was, Tricklebank with 25. University fared somewhat better in their second innings and niado.l4B. Tricklebank again batted attractively, this time making 37, and Blandford compiled 27 in confident fashion. Jacob.seu took a long time to make 23. Petone needed 17 runs tv get an outright win, with ten minutes to go, but could only reach lj. The closing stages of the game were full oE excitement.' One of the umpires, by error, pulled stumps with one ball to go, thus destroying Petone's chance of an eight-point win, and <jhe. «Ide had to be content with five points. Jacobsen and Council resumed University's ■ innings. Smith bowled a maiden over to Jacobsen from the northern end. Connell' faced Riddolls, nnd obtained fi single from the first ball, but iTacobsen was bowled in the saute over. Sandl'ord was the incomer.- Connell lusted a few more.overs, nnd was then caught behind the stumps. Blandford was next, but soon lost his partner, Sandford being bowled by Riddolls. Blandford played some nice shots, but was beaten when he made a bad attempt to play one of Smith's deliveries. Paetz and Trieklpbank looked like'staying the rot, but Paetz scooped one of Riddolls's.deliveries into the hands of Croft. Dunn replaced Riddolls, but the change was to the liking of Tricklebank,' who played the nqw bowler with confidence.' Stevens, tin: new batsman,::.vnritured out of his crease to Smith, and the ball bounced ofrVthc pads of the wicketkeeper' on ..to the stumps. Kdglcy and "Vietmeyer did not last long, being out )bw to successive balls from Smith. Tricklebank was stumped 'when' he went for a hit. and the innings closed at 3.35 p.m.

Features of University's, second .innings were the displays of Blnndford and Tricklebank; Blandford opened confideut-

ly, and did well until he was well caught by Dunn off Ms bowling. Trieklebank was confident facing Dunn, who overpitched many of his deliveries. He was lucky to escape being stumped off the same bowler, but Nieholls made up. for this when the batsman missed a ..■"full, , pitcher" from Moloney. Jacobsen's 2a was a slow and laborious t eff6rt'.V The other batsmen went cheaply; but Dean made a'bit.ibf a stand in the closing stages of the innings. Smith bowled excellently, coming out with the fine figures of 'five wickets for 41 runs. O'Leary and Boberts- opened Petone's second innings, the bowlers being Tricklebank and Vietmeyer. Vietmeyer bowled O'Leary in his first over. Roberts hit two fours off Trieklebank and was then bowled. Riddolls was-bowled next ball. The side had to get four runs, in the last over of the day to obtain an outright win. Two was added to the total, but Nieholls was unable to get the ball away. There was intense escitcment among the spectators, and this increased when : one of the umpires (Mr. J.,,Slack) ordered the drawing of stumps after only live balls had been bowled, Petone then still being two runs short. Four overs were bowled in the ten minutes of Petonc's second iunings.
