WELLINGTON'S GOOD FORM

- Kuns were scored very freely from the Institute Old Boys' bowling at Kelburn Park, Wellington making 457 for four wickets at stumps in reply to' Institute's lirst innings score of 25.3 for nine wickets (declared) jnade the previous Saturday afternoon on the Basin Reserve No. 1 wicket. Wellington secured a five-poiut win, using the occasion as batting practice against plain bowling on a wicket that played truly and easily. The outfield was, tas,t and the boundaries clobe. Only two of tlic 86. overs sent- down in the four hours were maidens. , Excellent cricket was witnessed by many sun-bathing spectators. From the beginning Whyte and Foley proved the bowling to lack vice, and the first 100 runs were made in 58 minutes, Whyte securing his SO in 55 minutes. He reached his 00, and 150 runs, were up in 85 minutes, when hp- was caught by Ptevens'*nt lirst slip off 'A.. McLean. Sixty of his runs came from beautifully-timed boundary shots, the batsman using his feet and lunging faultlessly in front of the wicket. Ho was master' throughout. .1. Ell joined Foley who had been batting soundly and judiciously at a faster. rate than usual. Foley was then 58. KU at once lifted his left knee, scoring two bouudaries off Henderson. He was over-eager, and made one or' two impetuous btrokes, evidencing a tendency to hook and hoist anything short. At the tea adjournment the score was 187 for one wicket. Foley 64 and Ell 28. Ell attacked everything but balls of immaculate length. Each gave the semblance of'a chanco off A. McLean. When Ell was in the1 seventies A. McLean dropped a hard chance off Henderson, and Prince, at fine leg, dropped Ell ott A. McLean—the' only bowler- whose length troubled the batsmen. Ell and l'oley had ! added 148 and Foley was two short ot his century when he snicked Henderson wide of Stevens in the slips. Stevens dived and held.a brilliant one-hand catch. Foley's innings was very sound and occupied 170 minutes." He hit eleven ipurs and one six, bis scoring at times being %ci> brisk. Morgan .joined ,EII,. who hoisted his century in' 75 minutes with two straight-drive* for, si** Morgan-had made only 10 "whence /as caught-^ehmd the wicket'off'. A: McLean': .338—3—10. Milton Thomas, a enlt playing his first senior "amc joined Ell. and the pair added nearly 60 runs in a delightful partnership, Ell simply flogging any loose balls ot a sorely-tired lot of bowlers Prince sent up a lob to the off, it kept low..til made a weak attempt to square-cut it and he chopped it on .to his wicket. 396-4-108 at 5.35 p.m. Ell's innings had been daring and forcing but successful. He hit 2o fours and three sixers, and batted tor about 100 minutes. Many of his shots reached the boundary with the fieldsmen still standing. Montcath and Thomas continued to make runs from tired bowling, and, both shaped faultlessly, Thomas particularly impressing. ' The Institute bowling lacked-hre ana variety. A. McLean—thanks to length almost-entirely—was the bes.t of the eight, bowlers, he bowling 19 overs for 100 runs i and two wickets, and deserving better re-1 suits." Henderson, as the only bowler ol; any pace—and he was only fast-medium— bowled •21 overs for 106 runs and one I wicket. He deserved better results, one or , two hot chances being dropped, but he | was never troublesome. The other, bowlers were all of a type—slow.
