THE ITALIAN WARSHIP

BRILLIANT RECEPTION

OFFICERS ENTERTAINED

Tho Palm Lounge at the Hotel St. George was the scene of a brilliant entertainment given in honour of the captain and officers, of the visiting warship, the Armando Diaz, on Saturday evening.. ■ . ..'■'. ' ■■ ■ The Italian colours were given prominence, the scarlet, white, and green being most effective. Poets have sung of "painting the lily and gilding the rose," but it remained for those who designed the Wellington party decorations to arrive at coloured lilies —for Ihe artistically, shaped arums had been tinted by means of dyes in tones of scarlet and green, and, grouped with the natural white ones, gave a wonderful effect. Palms and other flowers wont to make an unusual and delightful ensemble.

Thero has seldom been a more vividly coloured grouping of guests in this city—the deep blue and ■'gold' of the naval uniforms contrasting with the scarlet and black of those of the military service. Decorations of 'many varieties added to the brilliancy of tho scene.

The Consul for Italy, Cay. "Dott. G. Formichella, received his guests ' with Captain Jachino and Commander Mig-

noli, each giving a pleasant and cour leous welcome, f Then the guests as 2 sembled into groups, a number of those r centred by oflicers of the warship, wlu 1 seemed to get on wonderfully well con sidering lingual difficulties., .Generous d hospitality marked the, conversazione t part of the evening, ,and later the - guests moved upstairs to the, dining 3 room, which agajnJ was a- triumph in tho way of. decoration,' the1 Italian col 3 ours again being arranged on the buffet j tables'. .The "two-decker" Stylo oi 2 tho table emphasised.the'colouring in . a particularly effective way.- ■ A fine ) orchestra 'played "Giovanezza," all r, standing to attention, and,the British ' National Anthem;' thus concluding a - memorable and delightful cvoning.
