LANDING OF HENTYS
TODAY'S CELEBRATIONS

MELBOURNE, This Day. Today begins the second-century, of :the history of Victoria. Just.a hundred years ago the Henty. family landed at Portland from the small schooner Thistle with,their few cattle and sheep, and established the first'settlement in Victoria. . . ' , The celebrations, which have been proceeding for a week at Portland, culminated today in the presentation of a pageant re-enacting the historic landing. The usual population of tho town of 2000 was swelled to more than 20,000 for the occasion by visitors from far'and near. Many of■ the .descendants of the, Hcntys arc among the visitors, including Mrs. Coster, from Nelson, New Zealand, who is visiting with her daughter, Nellie Coster. Mrs. • Coster is Stephen Hcnty's only surviving daughter. Sho and her brother, George Edward Heuty, who was unable to leave Sydney on account of illness, belong to the generation which immediately fol< lowed the Honty pioneer brothers.
Proceedings today began with a" united service on the beach in tho cold grey light of dawn. The Duke of Kent arrived by H.M.Sj Sussex from Tasmania at 10.35, arid came nsho'ro to witness tho pageant ded picting the historic landing of tha Henrys. '
