THRILL FOR HIKERS
Whale off makara
Whether it was thisvwhale or another cannot bo knpwn, but four Wellington boys and two rowboat fishermen saw an unusually large whale close inshore at Makara last Sunday. The boys had hiked out from town and were fishing from the rocks when a whale was seen in fairly deep water just outside the rocks. They were astonished at its size seen at such close range, and were more astonished when, after a time.,it left the rocks, dived, and reappeared, spouting, apparently making a straight line for two fishermen in a boat some distance from the shore. The fishermen were evidently quite as astonished and not nearly so comfortably placed, and hauled up their gear mv a hurry and made for the shore. The whale was visible at intervals for about half an hour.
