LOWER HUTT BOROUGH FINANCE
(To tha Editor.) Sir,—ln July, -1933, the Mayor (Mr. J. W. Andrews) addressed a public meeting on the financial position of the borough. On examination of the latest available' printed copy of accounts, 1032-33, the disquieting disclosures of the Mayor are verified. The outstanding rates amount to £25,751, and rates valued at £5407, dating from 1929, were remitted or written off. The borough debt is £326,852, and accumulated sinking funds £28,938. The drift policy of succeeding councils is alarming to ratepapers. When will the Mayor N speak again on borotfgh finance? Has tha council approached the Government for consideration regarding the loss of £23,385 in rates since 1930, through properties reverting to the Crown? The accounts intimate they were printed in Auckland, although Wellington possesses modern establishments and a large percentage of the ratepayers are employed there.—l am, etc., ■ s BATEPAYEB.
