MRS. J. MCMILLAN

The death occurred recently in Auckland of Mrs. Jessie McMillan, a widelyknown ana greatly respectea citizen. Mrs McMillan, who was born in Scotland, was a daughter of the late Mr. Archibald Clark and came to New Zealand with her parents in 1849. Her father was chosen as the first Mayor of Auckland in 1851. In 1862 she returned to Scotland, where she completed her education before again coming to Now Zealand. She was married in 1871 to Mr. C. 0. McMillan, a well-known Auckland business man, Mrs". McMillan lived an eventful life and did a great deal of travelling. As a gill she mot Abraham Lincoln, and with her parents she was a passenger on the first tour organised by Mr. Thomas Cook, founder of, the famous agency. She was present at the anniversary celebrations at Naples of one of the great victories by Garibaldi, and she had vivid memories of the Maori wars in New Zealand.

Mrs. McMillan, who was eighty-nine at the time of. her.aeath, was greatly lovca by all who knew her, and her passing is the severing of another link with New Zealand's early days.

Mrs. McMillan, whose husband died about seven years.ago, is survived by a' son, Mr.1 Gibson McMillan, of Auckland, and three daughters, Mrs. Harold Bull, Of Puketutu; Island,-. Mrs. Frank Bull, of Mangere, and Mrs. H. D. A. Major, of Oxford, England. There are eight grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.
