BILLIARDS
WELLINGTON CHAMPIONSHIP
The third, round of. the Wellington provincial inter-club amateur billiards chamuionsnin was opened last night. The initial game, between IS. 31. G. Simpson (G.P.O. Club) and W. J. McMillan (Fire Brigade Club) was won by the former after playing a consistently good game. McMillan, through a disappointing run,' had very little opportunity throughout, and beyond one good break of 37, his usual form was not produced. Among Simpson's breaks were 34, 32, and 50, and his victory places him iv the semifinals opposed to H. Shanks.
Two Commercial Travellers' Club representatives met in the second game, J. L. Petley and It. C. Butters. Butters won after a particularly good exhibition, in which line cuemanship was displayed, particularly by Bjitters. This player is very effective, particularly with' screw shots, which are a feature of his play. The difficult shots -which he mastered greatly interested an appreciative audience. Butters settled down first, and with consistently useful breaks retained his early lead, and finally won by 300 to 249. Among the better breaks were: Petley, 33, 30, 25, 27; Butters, 30, 53, 2G. An interesting, game is expected tonight at 7 o'clock, when two of Wellington's leading players will meet, W. N. Tucker (Federal Club), an ex-champion, and A. Duncan (V.M.C.A.), present champion. A game will follow at 8 o'clock between AY. Petersen (Working Men's Club) and H. G. Harrington (P. and T. Social and Literary Club).
