LOSSES IN WAIRARAPA
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
MASTERTON, This Day
In. contrast with the. boisterous weather experienced during the weekend, yesterday was beautifully fine,. 1 and there.was little evidence of the. southerly storm beyond a coating of .snow on the low hills of the Tararua Kanges and on the Mangarakis. Although the losses of lambs are reported to have been in some cases up to 15 per cent., a Jarge number of farmers appear to have escaped any serious mortality amongst their flocks. In the dairying areas, in more exposed parts, 1 ho cold conditions killed a.number of calves, losses being reported from Motarawa, Carririgtou, and Parkvalc herds. Fortunately a big proportion of the lambs wereoid enough to withstand the cold fairly well, but !;ad the storm come a wfeek or two earlier no doubt the losses would have been far greater.!
Floods were anticipated by settlers in the Lower Valley, and stock was removed to higher ground, but fortunately the storm abated before any flooding occurred.
