JI: is the first conference of its kind that has been held in the Dominion, and it is expected that the results will be in [■■reaching, as an indication was given recently by tho Director of Education that any recommendations made by the conference would receive favourable consideration.
The presidential address was given by Dr. Elizabeth Gregory, who said it \v;is advisable that senior teachers should feel a definite-responsibility in the training of younger graduates. Under tho Australian system teachers did not apply for positions, but went where they were sent.
Dealing with freedom of speech, the speaker said that too little freedom was given in New Zealand, and she thought it would bo bettor that opinions should bo stated rather than bottled up. In tho development of tho work in social science,, followed by tho education of the people, lay the only hope for the future, so what could they expect it' freedom of speech and freedom of experimentation were not permitted in social sciences?
