LONG SEEVICE
UNION COMPANY RETIREMENT
After serving with the Union Steam Ship Company in various capacities, chiefly as a steward, for 47 years, Mr. John C. Farrant, who is extremely well known in local shipping circles, is retiring at the end of this month. Mr. Farrant joined the Union Company's service in January, 1888, and in the following years acted as a steward on most of the company's cargo vessels. At different times he has filled positions in most of the firm's vessels, acting as chief stewurd on various ships, including the Wnnaka, Kini, Pukeko, and TerawhitL When the intercolonial steamer Manuka was wrecked at Long Point between Bluff and Dimcclin, on the night of December 16, 1929, Mr. Fnrrant was the last person to leave the ship. The Manuka later became a total loss.
Mr. Farrant is . a member of the Masonic fraternity. He lives at, 65 Wilson Street, Newtown, and has stated his intention of taking a holiday in Sydney next mouth. , ._
