MARIST SUCCEED
One goal ahead at half-time, the Marist team held Lower Hutt comfortably m their first division match at the Basin Reserve, and won by 5 goals to 3. ihe high wind and the heavy ground prevented the teams from showing their usual combination, but Marist bad the match in hand all the way.
The teams were:Marist.—Turkington; Laracy, Duffy; Vaney, HindleJ T. Quirke; Barton, E. Kershaw, Condon, Hatchard, M. Quirke. I Lower Hutt.-Bodj; Gardner, Hazel; McGloy, Butland, Stobb; Batchelor, Jessep; McGrath, Cross. , ■ Lower Hutt won the toss and had the advantage of the wind in the first spell, Hazel opening, the way for Jessep whose shot bounced under the bar, but was cleared. Marist then attacked and Barton tested Body, who haved finely for the Marist winger to snap up the ball and shoot over_the bar.. ' Hutt worked their way back and kept Marist confined to the goal area, Jessep finally beating Turkington with a good drive. Batehclor followed by placing.a corner-kick neatly for Hafcel- to block a clearance and'find the net: Marist, two goals in arrears, made a spurt and Barton and M. Quirke led rushes, the second of which was stopped byBody, who was unable to clear properly, arid'Condon came up to score. Another goal came to a magnificent shot by Barton aikl the scores were even..- A minute or two later K. Kershaw registered a third goal for the winners, and after both sides Had had their share of. the ball -M. Quirke mude a solo effort and beat Body.. Hutt attacked at. the end of the half and li;it'.chelbl1 again placed a flag kick nicely, i Corner taking the'scoring chance which presented itself. Marifit thus led at'the end of; the half by 4-goals to 3. Only one goal was scored in the second session, Marist beginning a solid attack and Barton finding the net after Condon, and Kershaw had been Baffled-by Body's fine defence. Marist dcmiiuated play for the rest of the game, but could not penetrate again, though some shots went close and K'ershaw hit tho bar towards the close'of the match. The final''score wus Marist 5, Lower Hutt 3. 'The referee was Mr. J. Gralia'm.
