THEFT AND.FALSE PRETENCES

Saying that drink made liim^rresponsible Bob Black, aged 44, a labourer and salesman, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court today to a charge of stealing from A. R. Blight at Upper Hutt a wallet containing money and postal notes of a total value of £4 2s 6d, and to a charge of obtaining from W. 3X Taylor at Mangatainoka £1 by false pretences. He was sentenced by Mr. E. Page, S.M., on the first charge to reformative detention for a period not exceeding two years, and on the other charge he was ordered to come tip for sentence if called upon within two years. '

Detective-Sergeant L. Revoll said that the accused had held himself out in the Pahiatua district to be an authority on sheep and cattle. He'had sold to Mr. Taylor for £1 a substance supposed to be willow powder, but which on analysis proved to be common salt, mixed with a little potash and sulphur. At Upper Hutt he sold the wallet mentioned in the charge, and then he went to the South Island, where for several months he evaded arrest with the assistance of his people. He had quite a list of convictions for false pretences.
