THE MANAWATU TROTS

DOUBLE TO PAUL DRUSUS

MEETING A BIG SUCCESS

(Special to tho "Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., Tliis Day. The Manawatu Trotting Club's Annual | Meeting at Awapuni on Saturday was a complete success. The weather was perfect, and there was a big attendance, the gate takings being ovor £00 better than last year, when the meeting was held at Ashhurst. With fields better than usual, wagering was more spirited, the sum o[ £6339 10s being handled compared with £4393 JOs last year, an increase of £19iG. The appearance of New Zealand's.champion, Harold Logan, added considerable interest to the proceedings, and the holder of the world's two mile record of 4min 13 2-3 sec was roundly applauded when he paraded for his exhibition mile. Nelson's Chum, driven by L. F. Berkett, set n merry pace from the outset, ami at the sis furlongs lie was two lengths clear of the champion, who took 32 4-ssee for the iirst two furlongs. Kelson's Chum .was further ahead at the half-mile, which was covered by Harold Logan in Imiii -1 2-osee. Teuedos was to have picked them up for the final three, but he failed to get going, and Nelson's Chum showed the way to the straight, where Harold Logan quickly closed the gap and went on to complete the distance in 2min llsec. BLUE BLOOD PAYS A PRICE. Ohinemutu and Bell Heather carried solid support in the opening event, the Awapuni Handicap, but Ohiucmutu, after appearing certain to get in the money, broke a short distance from the post and was beaten into fourth place. Bell Heather never went kindly, breaking continually-. Blue Blood went to the front going through the straight, and he led out with Black Native, Bell Heather, Gainsborough, Karl Bingcn, and Ohinemutu following in that order. Blue Blood held a commanding lead from Black Native, Earl Bingen, nnd Ohinemutu as they turned for homo. Nothing had a chance with the leader, Who won easily by six lengths from Earl Bingen. Black' Native broke, but so also did Ohinemutu, and the former held third money a couple of lengths ahead of Earl Bingen. Next to finish were Ohinemutu, Native Maid, and Native Bird. A GOOD RACE. The Ladies' Bracelet .was a good race, and live furlongs from home all but two horses were still in the picture. Jean Parrish was the early leader from Bara Gold, Guy Zolock, and Florric Real, the favourite, Jester, breaking up at the start. Five furlongs from home they were well buuehed, but then Guy Zolock shot to the front to lead into the straight from Jean Parrish and Orleigh Mills, with Jester handy. The issue was never in doubt, Guy. Zolock finishing well to win by throe lengths from Jean Parrish, with Orleigh Mills a similar distance away third. Jester was fourth, followed by Supertax, Bara .Gold, and FJorrie Real. AERIAL BOY ALL THE WAY. Beginning smartly, Aerial Boy was able to establish a good lead in the Pohangina Handicap, and he was in front all the ■way, scoring nicely from Peter's Fault. The latter lost a couple of; seconds at the start, but six furlongs from home ho went up abreast the leader. With half a mile to go, however. Aerial Boy started to draw away again, and he led into t)ie straight well clear of Peter's Fault, Storm Queen, and Golden Oaks. Nothing had a chance with the winner. Storm Queen put out a determined challenge for second money, but Peter's Fault finished well to hold her off by a length. Golden Oaks was fourth and Arthur Chimes next. SOLfDLY-RUN CUP. Th&-paee was on. all the way in the Cup, which proved a triumph for Paul Drusus, who came away over the last half-mile to win comfortably. Teii Kingi refused to go when the flag dropped, and Smoke Screen went to the frout, but was immediately displaced by Lady Author and Paul Drusus. When they had settled down Lndy Author was in charge, followed by Paul Drusus, Hard Words, Highland Derby, and Bell o' Mine. They covered the first half-mile in Imin llscc, and were going well. The mile took 2min 19 2-ssec. and the field bunched rounding the bend out of the straight. Going along the back Paul Drusus went up to Lady Author in the van, and he drew away near the far turn to lead across the top and into the straight well clear of Nelson's Chum, who had made a fast run, Hard Words, and Bell o' Mine. Paul Drusus was never threatened, and he won nicely by three lengths from Hard Words, who hung on well to beat Bell o' Mine by the best part of a. length. Nelson's Chum was fourth, ahead oi Smoke Screen, who .was well back. JEAN PARRISH EASILY. Jean Parrish was first away in the Longburn Handicap, and she was never Headed. Bara Gold, Florae Real, and Tracey Loeanda were her nearest attendants going past the stands, but going into the back stretch Jean Parrish was ten lengths ahead of Florrie Real. Guy Zoloek had improved to third at the far turn. Jean Parrish was eight lengths to the good at the home turn, with Florrie Keal, then Guy Zolock, Greatfast, and Bara Gold on terms next. Jean Parrish was never threatened, and she won by six lengths from Florrie Real, with Bara Gold third seven lengths away, just in front o£ Greatfast. First Judge and Guy Zolock were next. TASMAN FLIGHT NARROWLY. The McDonald Handicap was narrowly won by Tasman Flight from Arapai, the winner breaking just short of the post. Red Huia was the early leader, with Bell Heather and Black Native next. Bell Heilther and Red Huia broke on the trip. Passing through the straight Tasmau Flight went to the front, and she showed the nvay along the back and into the straight, followed by Arapai, Red Huia, and Blue Blood. The leader was well clear, but Arapai finished very fast and when the post was reached was only ;i Jong neck away. Six lengths buck came Red Huia, with Earl Bingen fourth, ahead of Blue Blood and Ohinemutu. The stewards met after the race but decided not to alter the judge's platings. FORM HORSE SCORES. Lislea was at a short price for the Dash Handicap, and he never gave his supporters any anxiety. He ran to the front after Arthur Chimes had made the pace to the half-mile, and led across the top arid into the straight, followed by Arthur Chimes, Bolinda King, Oro's. Pride, and Storm Queen. In the run to the judge, Bolinda King challenged strongly, but could get no nearer than a length and a half o£ Lislea. Oro'a Pride was third five lengths further back and Arthur Chimes 'fourth, ahead of Storm Queen. The lastnamed would not leave the mark at the start, and she interfered with Peter's 'Fault. * . CUP WINNER'S DOUBLE. Paul Drusus went back 24 yards as a result of his win in the Cup, but he succeeded in winning the other leg. o£ the double. Smoke. Screen was first out, and Teri Kingi did not leave the mark. They had not gone far before Highland Derby was in charge from Gnyraoud, Smoke ■ Screen, and Paul Drusus. Paul Drnsus .moved up into third place at the five, and Highland Derby showed the way across the top and into the straight, closely attended by Guymoiid. Paul Drusus, and Smoke Screen. Highland Derby, Guymoml, and Paul Drusus were in line passing the stewards' stand, and Smnke Screen was x'lialle-nsiup. ■In a good finish Paul Drusus did well to win Tiy over

v length from Smoke Screen, who got up to cut Guyniond out of second nioucv. Highland 'Derby was fourth and Lady, Author next.
