POLICE RAIDS
BOOKMAKING CHARGES
'(Uy Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, March i. A. well-organised raid on alleged bookmakers was carried out throughout Taranaki on Saturday afternoon, under the supervision of Inspector S. I lfawlc, of Now Plymouth. At Hawern, William Elder, the alleged occupier of the Arcadia Tea Rooms, Union Street, was arrested after a raid of the premises, on a charge of bookmaking.. At Waitara, Ernest Alexander Johnson' was arrested on a charge of bookmaking. At New Plymouth, Oscar Eoyce Ulander, Ernest Robert Byers, Sidney. Koy Lovell, and Frank Joseph Farrell were arrested at various premises and later charged with bookmaking. Along with Johnson, each was remanded on bail of £100 to appear at New Plymouth ou Wednesday. Elder will bo charged at Hawera. The following members of the police participated in the raids, which were carried out with military precision at 2.40 p.m.:—Senior-Sergeant E. T. C. Turner, Sergeant Henry, Detective's A* B. Mciklejohn and P. Kearney, Constables A. G. Quin, W. G. Wilson A J. Mills, A. C. Davis, J. Tockcr L E Mitchell, G. S. Stanton, and F. 'n! Lcnira, The accused Lovell was also charged with keeping a gaming-house.
