MONTH'S ACTIVITIES
At a meeting of the general committee of the Wellington Centre of the Xew Zealand Red Cross Society on Friday, Mr. G. M. Henderson presiding, it "was- stated that the sum of £42 9s o'd had been raised by the centre in aid of the Indian earthquake sufferers, the amount being remitted to headquarters for transmission to. the proper quarter. The chairman of the community singing committee was warmly thanked for his cheque representing tho net proceeds of a carol sing promoted ia aid of the society.. ■ . A very interesting report was received and tabled from the Braillo Club covering the year's work. Warm congratulations were extended to tho president .and members of the club for this flue record. Special thanks were extended to the executive of the Wellington R.S.A. for a cheque for £20 6s (3d, being part proceeds of Rose Day appeal. Comprehensive reports were received from the Red Cross nurses, that of Sister Lewis stating that over 700 students wore receiving instruction in first aid, homo nursing, hygiene, and sanitation in the primary and secondary schools. Home nursing and first aid senior classes had commenced for tho year, being well attended, and keen interest being shown. During the month :i voluntary aid detachment under the rules and regulations of the, British Red Cross Society as part of the New Zealand organisation had been formed. The Junior Red Cross activity ia the circles in the Wellington district was being well maintained. Sister Aitkcn reported upon her work in the schools and colleges, 700 students being under instruction. Some Junior Eed Cross circles wero busy preparing portfolios for transmission to circles in foreign countries. A class in first aid and homo nursing' representing the combined colleges, and held after school hours, was being started, and it reflected distinct credit upon tho pupils that they were sufficiently enthusiastic to attend in their own time. Tho president of tho ladies' auxiliary, Mrs. G. Hcndry, reported that during the month 263 garments, 20 pairs of boots and shoes, 6 layettes, and miscellaneous other comforts had been distributed. The Upper Hutt sub-centre furnished a comprehensive report stating that during the month several appeals had been mado to the depot for relief, particularly for baby clothes. Through the.agency of the sewing guild many requests for layettes had been made. It was reported to the society in the district that women wore entering hospital under-nourished and unfit, and tho committee) at Upper Hutt had been asked if something could not be.done for them. After investigation it was resolved to donate a sum of £5 to the Plunkot nurse to supply eggs and milk to mothers under her care. The nurse reported that the money had been used Ui full advantage and was very much appreciated.
