Therefore "Koroiki," ..who., .is the "Upoko Ariki" of his tribe is also "King" of his tribe.'; Then .agaiprthere-.was the reference to prince, and- princess; thVk'm of riung Koroiki" and other .'/-'Upqko Arikis.": Such titles; belong to: the'--Maori of high'rank",-.- TheyVvvere:the Bangatiras, meaning that the royal': blood-of 'the •Arikis" ran through their veins.; It was only with.- the spread '■ of education that the Maori .was. able to detect the full meaning of the'name: chief given to him by the pakeha. The chief in airy office in the cities is absolutely a .different person from an "Upoko Ariki" such as "King Koroiki." The "Arikis" were showered with love and loyalty by their tribes arid followers in the very same manner'as that shown- by all Europeans to their separate.
