KILBIRNIE'S 50 YEARS

SPLENDID RECORD

A half-century of service in. the education of the children of the district gives the Kilbirnia School a distinguished position among institutions of the kind, and in what tho school has done in proparing scholars for their various walks of lifo there- is a record of which those who have been associated with the school, on staff and on committees, might well feel proud. Apart from its flue record as an educational institution, the school has also gained distinction in all forms, of sport, particularly in. swimming and tennis. The completion, of fifty years' work is not being allowed -to pass without special celebration and jubilee functions are to take place tomorrow and on Sunday. As mentioned in "The Post" yesterday, many of the scholars enrolled at tho school when it was first opened on January 28, 1884, are to be present, and the roll-call of first scholars^ to bo made tomorrow afternoon by Mr; J. H, Worboys, for many years headmaster of the school, will be one of the noteworthy events of a big occasion. A big gathering of ex-scholars, members of staff and committees from 1884 onwards, and others who have had. particular interest in the school is expected. ■ "'■.-... . . ' i . . Over 150. old boys of the school served in the Great War, 23 of thorn making the supreme 'sacrifice. In this respect Kilbirnie School points with prido to the work carried out by tho school committee during and after tho war years— : work which resulted in the erection of the splendid memorial gate at tho school. . Soon after the school was opened fifty years ago the annual meetings of householders were held, and that at Kilbirnie was reported in. Hampton, 'Faulkiner, Bradbury, W. Claridge, Timmiris, S. Williams, and G. Smith. . At the meeting of the.new committee held. subsequently, Mr. Hampton was elected chairman and Mr. Faulkiner secretary. It was.resolved that certain necessary 'work in the way of fencing, etc., be carried out. A letter was received from.the Rev. It: Coffey, desiring the use of the schoolroom on Sunday afternoons, but it was decided to postpone consideration of the ' application till the next meeting." ; ' ' "'.-,'.. • : The report a year later showed that Mr. Faulkiner . had boen the chairman of'the committee, and that during the first year the average attendance at the school had been 56. Everything possible has been done to make the jubilee celebrations worthy of tho occasion. : Saturday's proceedings are to commence with the roll call of tho school's first scholars. The speakers at the opening ceremony will be Messrs. T. Forsyth, R. Semplo, M.P., J. H. Worboys, and J. J. Rodgers, the present headmaster. N- Several items are to be given by' the present scholars, arid afternoon tea will bo served in the infants' schoolroom. A reunion ball, to bo held in the.,Mayfair Cabaret in the evening, promises to be a great success; As Saturday's programme will bo a lengthy one, tho jubilee committee is especially anxious that exscholars should be at the school early to enable a prompt start to be made.
