SURFACEMAN'S DEATH
COLLISION WITH TRAIN
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) NAPIEB, March 1. A verdict that .Fred "White, railway surfaceman, i who succumbed to injuries in the Napier Hospital, died from slioek and hemorrhage caused by a collision between a velocipede ho was propelling and a special train near Pakipaki on February 14, and that no blame was attachable to the railway staff, was returned at an inquest today. • The evidence disclosed that a. copy of the train advice regarding special trains between Napier and Woodville was placed: in the surfaceman's box at Poukawa. This advice was subsequently found in the box. James Maedonald, statiomnastcr at Napier, said it was. the duty of all gangers and surfacemen .to examine their boxes before leaving their home station, and everything possible was done to see that the persons concerned should receive advice of special trains. "For some unknown reason it appears that the deceased neglected to clear his box before proceeding to work, therefor© he had no knowledge that the special train which, struck him was running," said witness. White, said witness in answer to a question, had a similar, though not serious accident in 1920.'
