THRILL ON A BEACH
A wild escapade of two fine upstanding liacks belonging to city gentlemen out for a iide—and a swim—gavo a. woman picnicker at the Makara beach a few days ago an opportunity of showing her skill in tho, handling of runaway horses. Tho two horses, in full riding equipment, wore tethered to a fence while their riders disported themselves in the cool waters of tho beach lagoon. Tho horses suddenly became restless. Roaring and x'^uug'nS *a their excited state, they broke away and, kicking tV-.u-somely, splashed into tho lagoon. Reaching tho mainland, they careered wildly across the rough boulders on the beach. Eventually tho horses landed on the track which leads through the fishermen's village, and made off at racing speed towards the rocks of tho littlo bay. Near tho track there wcro five ladies and a young man, with a billy boiling, preparing tea. Seeing the wild approach of the horses, there was intense excitement in tho party. One of tho ladies, however, stepped out gallantly and heroically faced.the charge. With her arms fearlessly spread out, she called "Whoa.!" and the animals promptly stopped a few inc'ios from her arms. When the breathless riders appeared on the scene they showered their praise on the woman for her pluck. She had had, it was subsequently gathered, a farm training.
