Companies or individuals that decide to spend1 large sums of money in big buildings tako caro to bo guided by well-qualified architects, but the same kind of precaution is not taken by the majority of persons who resolve to havo homes of their own—houses below a cost of £,1200. ■; ■ • ■ At tho annual meeting of the Now Zealand Institute of Architects this week Mr. E. Miller (Duuediu) remarked- that in a. total of 172 houses (under a cost of £1200 each), built during the past year in Dunedin, not more than ton or twclvo had been entrusted to architects for export planning and supervision of tho building''operations. The meeting was strongly of the opinion that tho profession should exert itself to prove to the public that its service was just as beneficial, proportionately, .to the persons who desired small houses as to thoso who ordered very large buildings. .. It was decided to adopt a remit of tho Auckland branch, that "e'ertificates of merit bo-awarded onco each year to registered architects responsible for tho design of the best small houso, not exceeding £1200 in cost, which has been erected in each of the- branch districts, . tho judging to be donb in New Zealand." A.proposal for tho establishment of small house service bureaux "*• in tho various districts was discussed at length, finally it was agreed that this matte* should be deferred until further information had been obtained from the ( United States of America on the operation of similar services in that country.
